This is a condition that results when the cornea is slightly curved and makes people with this condition experience light as sharp illuminations.A normal eye has both the cornea and lens curved in a rounded shape which both refracts any incoming light to produce a sharply focused image on the retina.

In astigmatism, the cornea and lens have mismatched curves which cause a refractive error that prevent the light rays from bending properly, the result is a blurry image.

People with this condition can also experience symptoms like eye strain or discomfort, headaches, and difficulty seeing at night. The most common way to treat this condition is contact lenses, eyeglasses, and surgery.

Reports from the World Health Organization say that refractive errors are both the most common ocular problems but are also the first cause of visual impairments and the second cause of visual loss worldwide.

Some famous artists and painters are known to have had refractive error eyes conditions. Painter, architect and sculptor El Greco of the Spanish Renaissance is believed to have had astigmatism due to the elongated figures in his paintings considered to be due to his refractive condition.
