This Artist Makes Mesmerizing Optical Illusions Using Simple Lines

Optical illusion always surprises us from a perspective we never thought existed. These tricks make our brain thinks that it's seeing what it's seeing, but the truth is, they are illusions made to confuse our brain. And Katy Ann Gilmore is one of those people who have unusual perspectives and imagination.

She creates her illusion with only one type of stroke: a line. By drawing lines and placing them in front of objects from the right angle, she creates an image that looks so surreal. We have a hard time believing the air is not curved and that those are only drawn lines. Very different from other types of artwork, Kate makes use of math and physics to calculate and know how to accurately draw the illusion. She is an artist, but her method of drawing is that of an engineer. She is based in Los-Angeles and now you can see a lot of works being displayed in galleries.

Since graduating in 2014, Katy’s works have been published in many galleries around the United States. She says she is heavily influenced by topography and the relationship between 2D, perpendicular planes and their distortions into 3D space. The author has a unique talent of turning simple 2D lines into dynamic works of art that we’re sure you’ll appreciate.

Using basic concepts of geometry to slowly increase the scale of her works, she combines straight lines and curved contours to create patterns that confound the eye. The skill and dedication it must take to hand-draw each line accurately in pen is a testament to her artistic talent!
