A man returning from work found an unexpected guest already comfortable in his bedroom. A mother squirrel had dropped in earlier and made a nest of twigs, dried pines and branches on his bed hosting two newborn squirrels. The unusual situation necessitated calling out of wildlife rehabilitation officers Christina and Michael who arrived promptly. Efforts to reunite by squirrels with their mother reached a dead end as she had no intention of taking them back; rather busying herself with fetching materials for a nest. Left with no choice, Christina and Michael decided to adopt Thumbelina. Her sibling was too young to survive on her own.
The unusual birth surroundings and upbringing away from other squirrels meant one thing, Little Thumbelina could not survive in the wild. Unlike other baby squirrels, little Thumb was slow and unconcerned with climbing trees and sudden dashes.
Her human parents’ efforts to try and introduce her to other squirrels was a dead end as she didn’t want anything to do with them. “I don’t know what she thinks she is, but it’s definitely not a squirrel.” One of her foster parents says.
Living happily in a new home, little Thumbelina enjoys spending time indoors as much as She loves sugar snap peas, arugula, and avocado.
