People Turned This Parking Lot Into A Safe Haven For The Homeless At Night

Homelessness is an issue that many countries have to face, whether you're a first-world or a third-world. Some of them were diagnosed with a disease that prevented them from working or had to sell everything for medical bills. Some probably had it worse.

Homeless people sleep on the streets, in the back alleys, rummage trash cans and can only hope from the charity. Brighthumanity hopes for a brighter day for humanity and this organization provided just that for these people who miss warm beds so much.

Australia charity Beddown seeks to help the homeless people go through cold nights easier. Their plan is to create shelters at places that are not in use at night, places like the vast parking lot.

They've launched a two-week trial with Secure Parking in Brisbane. This empty space here became a safe haven for the people.

Norman McGillivray, founder of Beddown, was the man who thought of why not use these unused space as temporary shelters.

The team worked on the plan to realize this unique idea. What's really great is that these spots are relatively safe at all time and if you add beds, the homeless now have a safe place they can sleep at ease.

From beds to haircuts - the homeless are provided all basic facilities, necessities and services.

Beddown wrote on their Instagram page:

“We will look to get as close as we can to a proper comfortable bed to provide the homeless with a great night’s sleep is our ultimate goal. Sleep deprivation is a massive issue for our homeless, so being in a place that offers shelter and is safe, secure and comfortable we believe will have a big impact on those who use Beddown.”

The reason parking lots are their favorite spot "is they offer great spaces which are sheltered, secure, spacious, clean and can be activated very quickly" as well as popped down when not in need really quickly.

After several first tests, they've earned 4.5 out of 5 on average for the sleep and beds from over 40 guests.

And what's really amazing and touching is that ALL of them felt safe during their sleep. It got to a point where they had to turn away 9 people from overcapacity. There was even a 15-year-old who used the facility.

The team wrote another lengthy post on their activities:

“It was great to start bringing the Beddown vision to life last night with a group of our awesome volunteers for the Dry Run. Thank you to our awesome group of volunteers who came in late on a Saturday night to help us trial and set-up some beds.

Although as expected we had a few challenges to overcome, it was awesome to start bringing Beddown to life. Beddown will provide an immediate response for those who sleep rough to access safe, secure shelter and access to a comfy bed and a great night’s sleep.

We will work with our other collaborative partners to provide long term solutions to transition our guests into accommodation, education and employment opportunities and ultimately put ourselves out of business (this is the vision)."

It is certainly a great thing to see that there are people who care and WORK to bring back warm beds for unfortunate people.

“Being able to sleep all night and away from drugs, I’m clearer in the day and have not used drugs for 8 days.”

“It’s the first time I have had a dream in years.”

“I don’t have to watch my back here.”
