The ‘duck and cover’ type of safety drills were a common thing with the older generation Americans. A somewhat protective measure in the event of an atomic explosion. But with the end of the cold war, the threat of being nuked has subsided but there is a nagging undercurrent fear that still nags the ‘land of the free’.
Mass shootings have been rampant for the past few years and the situation is not getting any better. This fear has been highlighted by this Twitter thread by ‘V’

“I received active shooter training at work today that I feel will save my life in the unfortunate (and likely) event that someone will open fire in public so I’m gonna share my takeaways. Some stuff is obvious, the rest might not be,” she wrote.

Taken to task by her “and likely” comment, she was obliged to clarify what she meant by the disclaimer; ‘I don’t say “likely” to offend. I say likely because mental health is a GROWING issue in this country. It is steadily being underfunded, yet guns are becoming more and more accessible (legally). Interesting. But that’s a convo for another day.”

Sadly, her explanation agrees with the hard facts that in 2017, almost 40,000 people die in shooting incidents across the U.S. These statistics are insanely high considering it is the most developed nation in the world and should definitely be doing so much better than others.

While the odds of being caught in a crossfire shoot out are very real, “V” later clarified this. “It’s been a mixed response. Most folks were upset about the ‘likely’ tweet,” she said. “In hindsight, saying ‘likely’ was an exaggeration.”With all facts in check, it’s now a sad reality that employers feel the need to train their employees on how to react in the event of an active shooter. V is a school teacher and with 113 people killed or injured in school shootings in 2018, she proves that it's always better to be prepared if the worst were to happen.

It is definitely crucial for teachers to be knowledgeable and well trained about the risks.“I’m a science teacher. I absolutely love my job,” V said. “I feel safe at work but the training definitely gave me some solid steps to follow if I was ever in that kind of situation because, before the training, I would’ve gotten under the table.”

Her twitter thread sheds some very solid practical advice on what to do in case you find yourself in an active shooter incident. Some of these tips seem obvious but most people can’t think logically when faced with panic in a life-or-death situation.

When the adrenaline kicks in and your survival instincts are triggered, the choices you make are life-dependent. While it may feel natural to hide somewhere safe from the shooter, acting positive and or even taking the initiative might significantly increase your odds of getting out alive.
